Group Portrait

For my group portrait I will be taking photos of some friends who are keen football fans. The idea is to take their photo dressed with all their supporters gear.

Good Weekend Magazine Brief

Subject: The subject for this brief will be ‘Flamenco dancing in Australia’.

Flamenco dancing has a dedicated band of followers in Australia and people who are passionate about their dancing. Some trace their cultural heritage back to Spain but many people participate just for pleasure.

Story in the image: The image will portray a dancer in action but will also convey the culture behind it. It must also show the importance of the music in Flamenco dancing.

Equipment required:

Lens – 24-105 mm and 70-200 mm

Lighting – The lighting will be dark and moody – trying to portray the interior of an inn or bar

Lighting set-up – Main and fill light will be on the dancer. A secondary light will be on a guitar on a chair.

Backgrounds – Black background

Props – Guitar, chair

Group Portraits

The lighting I used for this group portrait consisted of a tungsten light (left) softbox (to the right and high) and a reflector (at front).

Backgrounds, seperation, fill-lights and reflectors

This image has lighting from the side and a reflector on the opposite side. The lighting ratio was a little high in this image.

This image also has lighting from the side but the reflector was close providing a better lighting ratio.

(The image is a little out of focus as I was trying rear focus on my camera for the first time and kept forgetting to push the * button!!!!!!)

We ran out of time for me to do my other two shots using a separate light (I was the model).

Rembrandt and Hollywood Lighting

We looked at the difference between these two lighting techniques.

Hollywood (butterfly) lighting has the light placed directly in front of the subject and slightly higher. Lighting should be even across the face with two small shadows below the nose.

Rembrandt lighting has the light to one side and slightly higher than the subject. There should be a small triangle of light on the cheekbone to the side of the nose opposite the light source.
